victorious hair

I've always loved the way red heads are depicted in pin up and considered how most of the time the hair is wavy with curls facing away from the face in big rolls. I'm not really into rockabilly at all, I think Amy Winehouse has sailed that ship faaar away, but I do like a good sailor vibe!

I started browsing youtube's hair and makeup tutorials for pin up themed looks. If you've never checked them out, there are huge collections from normal people who just give tutorials that are really easy to achieve. Thanks to Cordelia of Curella Says for introducing Lauren to me, her videos are great! I found a few pin up vids and found these curls are called victory rolls. I thought they were just normal curls framing the face but in fact strands of hair are rolled up and pinned with no hair hanging down. I love this! Finally a style that's fab on curly hair too, in fact it's a bit easier when the hair isn't silky smooth as it stays put better.
This tutorial is seriously helpful, from a MySpace thread here,
There are some great tutorials around on youtube, this helped me the most as the blonde helps you see what's happening more easily but here are a few more...
Today I sported one on the side with the hair I usually tuck behind my ear. This wasn't big enough so I'll try another with more hair tomorrow and maybe one on both sides! I can't stress enough how easy this is and how smaller ones aren't too loud, they just frame the face nicely and are a little detail to add to a look.

you have such really lovely ringlet curls, and it is always a pleasure to see a fellow redhead with such lovely locks!
i have been reading your blog for a while and really enjoy doing so, and felt compelled to comment following your victory rolls post: definitely something i shall be trying myself, and love the effect that yours give - subtle and sweet!

Those CURLS! Gorgeous :)
You always do such lovely stuff with your hair.. I wish I was that talented/adventurous.. And that I had hair that was conducive to playing with, haha.

I'm so jealous of your hair! I wish I had some hardcore waves like that...I have pretty good hair I must say but it's just straight :-/
I really like that you only did one on that side too, it's just a bit of character withough looking like a cortoon character (haha, sorry about that one) :-)

I love this hairstyle and rockabily (Winehouse didn't kill it for me), but I've watched the videos and it looks like so much work! I don't have the patience...

alas, I've been trying for being a good hour+ now but have had to resign to trying it another time, mainly due to the lack of esential kirby grips/rollers and my arms ache some being in the air for so long!
I've got straight medium length ginger hair (I relate and feel for your ginger taunts/compliments!) so if it all turns out well we both should have some gorgeous perfectly styled 'do's' right in with the retro look. good luck!

I love your hair!
Mine was dyed red for two years from when I was 17 until I was 19... Good times.
It was never that long though and to this day I am too lazy to do anything with it :)
