My sister is having a party in the garage. It's 1.20am and she thinks I don't know she has loads of friends in there, including my two younger brothers and plenty of beer. These are the perks of being the oldest and in charge, you're not invited to a party in your own house!
I'm feeling a bit lonely. I really, really want to go out and dance and party but for the whole summer friends have had no money or new priorities such as a bun in an oven, etc. While swanning around charity shops is lovely, what about the rest of the summer? I miss being with friends every day and going out whenever you want. Today I went to the cinema with my Nan and her friend from bingo; if that isn't bordering on sad I don't know what is. Mamma Mia was extremely marvellous though, the kind of film you watch and it makes you all tingly and happy, but it did strike the chord of summer romances, or in my case lack of them. Oh well, it's just one of those nights. This morning I got this dress from Vintage Virgin which said was ready to wear but smelled like someone had certainly partied hard in it. It's not my normal style but I said before I was looking for a floral bandage dress and it's more interesting to shake things up. I would wear this dress if I was going out any time soon. All dressed up and no where to go!

Btw, my hair is wet, not straightened. I'm filling the summer voids with day tripping alone! Is anyone from around/live in Nottingham? After the amazing Oxford recommendations, I'm hoping the rumours are true of large vintage warehouses?

Oh that sucks! There is nothing worse than a boring summer. The dress is gorgeous and deserves a night out. Don't worry you're just in a social rut which means a massive peak is soon to follow!

I'm feeling like this too at the moment. Just sort of bored and down in the dumps.
What you need is a hobby. I stupidly decided to start writing a novel and now I am completely obsessed with it, I can't concentrate on anything else.
Solved one problem, caused another, now i can't focus in class! haha

I went to see Mamma Mia just 2 days ago. It was fantastic & we were all saying that we wanted the cinema to play it again! =D
I like that dress a lot!

YAY!!! You found the floral bandage dress you wanted!
How about you call up a friend and insist you guys go out? Not now, but in the weekend.
During the week I sometimes wish my bf would go out with me (this is my BOYFRIEND, the person who is supposedly OBLIGATED to go out with me) and he isn't up for it.
Not everyone's cool like us.
Mamma Mia is the movie to watch with grandma!
Saw it sunday and loved it, boyfriend suffered the whole way through :)

What a great buy! The print is really lovely.
I would have to say I feel the same way-summer's more than halfway over and I haven't even gone to the pool yet (let alone do much with friends), and the pool is all anyone in my town does during this time. Sigh!

Bun in the oven??? Wow.... already???
Anyhow...the dress deserves to be aired out.... hope you get the opportunity to wear it out!

i feel your pain, being too poor to go into london on nights out sucks big time!
it'll just be a phase tho and before you know it by the end of the summer you'll be a social bee once again :)
and the dress is gorgeous!!
Posted by: elisabeth | July 23, 2008 at 11:17 AM
I know exactly what you mean - after leaving the bright lights of the city (Newcastle upon Tyne) I'm finding a new (small) town and a lack of friends to go out with really depressing. I'm even starting to miss the drunk hen dos... no, maybe I'm not. But I do miss cocktails and dancing!
Love the dress - looks fab on you!
Posted by: Caroline | July 23, 2008 at 01:51 PM
That dress is lovely!! I sure hope you find some place to go soon... take that dress out!
And i love Vintage Virgin, they have the brightest clothes.

Love that dress.
I see your point too, that is why I have that one short paragraph, saying "it doesn't mean if you are raised in a fashionably aware household you won't have style" and that really the whole post is just about learning to appreciate how I was raised as benefitted my personal style.
I quite agree a lot of these rules are just old-fashioned and honestly stuffy! I mean, isn't dressing supposed to be fun?

My sister doesn't even have any parties that I can be not invited to!
I love the floral bandage dress, it looks very happy and tropical to me!

The pattern on that dress is gorgeous! I'm sure you'll be able to party in it soon :]

My summer's shaping up to be pretty boring too.
I'm from Nottingham but I've never found the warehouse. I'll have a look next time I'm not busy baking cakes and making skirts :)

I love that dress.
My brother always has parties without me. It's not fair.

Not sure if this is a good place to post this, but I wanted to tell you: well said on nymag.com.

I totally understand how you feel, all of my friends are working over the summer and I'm not!
Love love love this dress, it's you in the sense that it's floral and girly, but because it's skin tight, it adds that edge!
Gorgeous figure!

I can definately empathise with the summer of lonliness. I guess the 1st summer in uni is like that for everyone, you all come back and have different priorities and a new outlook on life.
Unfortunately I'm filling my time with a soul destroying summer job to clear the inevitable overdraft!
Hang in there, the dress looks fabulous btw!

love this on you! the print is like balenciaga--minus the giant sleeves and hips!
Posted by: Heybigtrender | July 23, 2008 at 08:20 PM
i'm from nottingham and the rumours of the warehouse are true! Piles upon piles of clothes, shoes and bags to wade through. There's also an amazing new vintage shop called "Cow" that's just opening up around the same end the vintage warehouse is at (the hockley area). Let me know if you want to know anymore/where anything is :)

Hey Selina, I met you at that Brum bloggers meeting (wearing the topshop skirt)
If I'm in Brum soon and you're bored you're welcome to come to a gig with me. Might go into Harbourne or Solihul next time im around as well, brum is devoid of charity stuff!!! x

The print on the dress is fantastic, the style is also sooo flattering on you!

I'm from right near nottingham and I go there all the time, I haven't heard of this vintage warehouse. But thats probably cos it's not in the city centre, I only ever shop there. The city centre itself doesn't have much to offer really, the usual high street shops, a couple of really gothic shops (Ice Nine and Void), some crap 'fashion' stores and the usual posh oxfam. If you find out about this warehouse, then please let me know.
a tip: I personally think a great place for a day trip is Liverpool. Packed with little vintage shops and some amazing not-so-big shops that don't seem to be anywhere else but mainland europe. go there!
if you want to ask me anything about shopping in Nottingham, then comment me on my blog :)

i love this dress, it fits you like a glove! and i totally know what you mean about having no money, i cant wait to get my student loan in again! http://auburn-magpie.blogspot.com/

I lived in Nottingham until 3 weeks ago! The warehouse is pretty good, but you need a lot of stamina because it is literally just a warehouse with huge heaps of clothes on the floor everywhere. Although someone told me it has become a little better organised since...
And yeah probably my favourite shop when I left was the new vintage shop Cow, on George Street. Really good range of stuff, and pretty affordable.
Also good old Celia's Vintage on Derby Road is worth a look in, although last time I went I thought it was getting a bit pricey. & Daphne's Handbag up Mansfield Road has a good range of accessories, and there's a few random vintage shops further up Mansfield road as well, just around the corner with forest road east.
Posted by: Anna Pie | July 24, 2008 at 03:06 AM
ah lovely shottingham! On the warehouse, it is true that it's piles and piles of things. Most of them will need a bit of a scrub though. Cow is very good, GREAT variety but everything above £10. Celia's has unfortunately decided to focus on Fancy Dress and has a small selection of vintage on the basement, all very expensive. Still worth a browse and across the street there's a good Save the Children that sometimes has some good goodies. I don't recommend the city centre for charity shops, the best place I think is Beeston high St... specially the Salvation Army. Just hop on the Rainbow 5 or 36 and get off at Beeston bus station, then work your way down and grab the bus back to the city from this little chinese supermarket in a corner. There's a store accross from this supermarket owned by an old lady, she has quite a share of vintage accesories but all REALLY overpriced. Still worth a peek, it's a very interesting shop and she REALLY likes to talk.

aaaaactually, just remembered that Oxfam in the city centre was having a 50% off sale last time I went, some good stuff left around.
Posted by: Penny | July 24, 2008 at 03:35 AM
your post just made me go ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh during lunchtime!

Just remembered - Blind Lemon used to do Vintage Fahion Fairs in Nottingham that my friend and I used to go for. We used to do a day trip out from Brum for them - it isn't too far to go I don't think. I know they still do them in Sheffield, but don't know if they still do Nottingham - and I haven't had a Blind Lemon newsletter in a while... Might be worth a google though!

http://galadarling.com/article/how-to-have-a-summer-romance-with-yourself
As if by magic, Gala Darling writes of how to have a summer romance with yourself. I'm perpetually single, but most of the time it doesn't bother me (ok, it does sometimes, I watched MIss Congeniality yesterday and awwww). I hate being at home, now that I finished my 4th year, pretty much EVERYONE is away and living elsewhere, there's little left for me to return to. Hopefully next summer, I will have my own house to go to.
Chin up. You're fabulous, don't let the situation get you down.

I have this image of you in the cinema with your nan and her bingo friend in THAT dress. Whilst it should be sad, I can't stop laughing!!! :)
I hope summer picks up coz it's almost over!
Posted by: Imelda Matt | July 24, 2008 at 02:12 PM
That dress is definitely different?
I think I like it though...
it would look fierce with some white doc martens.
and i am sorry that you have nothing to do this summer.
but hey hanging out with grandparents can be cool sometimes as well?

this dress is so flattering on you! i think you should have gone down and shown them how it's done.
i hope your summer gets better...you deserve it, even if that's only based on how fabulous you always look!

Hey
i'm also from Nottingham and yes the vintage warehouse is appropriately called 'VINTAGE' and is just out of the twon area its on Belward Street I think, you go down Upper Parliament Street to get to it!
There is also the amazing 'COW' in Hockley and 'Wild' and 'Wilder' right near there which are both vintage stores as well!
Let me know if you need more directions :D x
