Great post, especially as I've just finished my internship year, I can relate to a lot. It's annoying as tv makes the industry seem easy and one-sided when it's not; I worked for a company that wasn't immediately clear to others but still extremely important in the grand scheme of things. Can't wait to read the rest of your guide!

Winnie

Wow. What an amazing post! This must have taken you ages to type up and so refreshing to read the real side of interning and how dedicated you have to be.

I also still can't believe you almost chose a Maths degree, I certainly don't have a head for numbers. I totally agree about choosing a course you're going to love. I chose my first degree (Art History) because I adored it and then doing my masters (Marketing) now, has given me some great transferable skills. I'm really looking forward to being able to put what I learnt from both courses into practise.

I will definitely be looking for internships along with the actual job hunt and will definitely be bearing this post and the next one in mind!

Claire

i read this from start to finish and can only say that i now love you forever and ever. Because i live in the middle of farm county, the only ever work experience i get seem to involve internet magazines and companies. I was listening to the radio when they mentioned the increased applicants and inwardly groaned. Your post has made my day a little better :)

This is so helpful! Thank you so much for posting this. I have a question for you, I am currently planning a big move down to London and have always dreamt of working in fashion. However when it came to doing a degree i felt pressured into doing it for others not me, and ended up studying physiotherapy for a year, i dropped out as this was clearly not for me. I could not be unfaithful to my dreams and what I really wanted to do. I am planning on studying an online degree. My question to you is . . do you think i can still get internships, would someone give me a chance in the sea of graduates my search feels almost destined to be hopeless. It is hard enough for people with degree but what about those with out who might have more ability and given the chace through work related experience make a good intern. Please let me know what you think!

Wow- GREAT post! :) I'm going to tweet this

Quite possibly one of the most useful posts I've read in some time. I realise competition is tough, but I much prefer it when people are willing to share their experience & advice.
I think my course has work experience time during year 2, which is handy. That was one of the things I was looking for when I applied. I wish there was more opportunity outside London because I'd definitely have tried to get a placement this summer - I just can't afford to stay in London right now.
Anyway, again thanks for your tips! You must've spent ages writing this out.

Jacquie

I really needed to see this! I'm going on a year out in France next year (for my degree) and I have no idea what I want to do!

You've given me hope :)

What a great post, with real advice. I have spent the past 12 months interning at a knitwear design company in Manchester and felt very lucky to have been able to work outside of London but in fashion design. Interning is hard but hopefully worth it after graduating :) x

This post contains a wealth of great advice. I am so glad that you wrote this, its nice to read something from the point of view of a former intern. As someone who is currently scouting internships this is all great advice for me. I cant wait to see what else you write on this subject! :)

Amy Stern

Great article. You summed it up the best. It is a good idea to find an internship in the career you want to pursue. Therefore, when it's over, and you start interviewing for a job, you already have experience. That is key. To make sure you land the internship you want you should contact Vault for help. Even though I am employed by Vault I honestly believe they will be able to find you the right internship and help you prepare for the internship interview. Check them out at http://www.vault.com/wps/portal/usa/internships

this is VERY useful, thankyou. i'm already planning for internships for next year. i've been thinking about applying for a while but this guide re-emphasized the need to for me to do something. finished my first year at uni studying history so need to see if fashion is my future.

Sharon

thanks for this post! im from the US but climbing the ranks of the fashion industry works the same way over here. it was nice to see an actual intern's perspective. i am definitely starting to think outside of the box and along the lines that you have explained. just need to figure out how exactly to get my foot in the door before i graduate, but i am only going into my 2nd year so i have time. its comforting to hear that you hsve success through this blog and by landing some great gigs but tht you did not start til later.

Cassie

Thanks for this post! I've just finished my second year at uni in Manchester, and am thinking about applying for internships. There's not that much first hand experience that you can read about on the net, so it's been great to find this post. Just got to get myself organised now and get applying!

The only problem I keep thinking about, and one you underlined, was the location. Living in Manchester for uni and originally coming from Devon, I don't know how to get around the staying in London issue...guess instead of spending the final year loans, for once I really will have to save them!!

Tessa

Great tip about Crashpadder! Again, very inspiring. Best of luck in your future escapades!

Dear Writer,
Could you pls contact La Bella London at the Emirates Arsenal Football Retail Complex.

We would like to use this as a adddition for our intern brochure.

I agree- the experience is cuciral!I interned last spring at a Boston alternative-news weekly and wouldn't change a thing. Sure, I didn't get a paycheck and had to work double-shifts as a waiter both days of the weekend to make sure my bills got paid, but it wasn't without perks (free Red Bull for one).I got to be a part of the editorial process for a major-market publication- contributing ideas, writing stories, conducting interviews and going on-location for other stories that saw the light of day with a 50,000-plus circulation across the metro-Boston area. The experiences I had there were simply one-of-a-kind.Sadly, they didn't have any open full-time spots when the internship came to a close, but they did keep me on to freelance for their publications, which turned out to be a nice little addition to my standard 9-5 job's paychecks. :)

A designer believes up blends of line, percentage, color, and structure for intended apparel. They may have no regular sewing or design making skills at all, and may only draw or contemplate apparel.
